Sounds like a David Drake inspired AI linking and controlling all the vehicle mounted weapons in a section for anti aircraft/artillery fire might be a thing. Though infantry is included in that universe and the vehicles are manned.
As far as body armor goes. I consider it situation dependent even in the present. Someone attacks my house? Sure. Standing security at a checkpoint? Absolutely. Humping cross country through the subtropics for 9-10 months out of the year? Nope. Even if I know I’m going to a firefight. There’s other things I’d rather carry for some of the weight. Heat exhaustion is a thing. The summer I was 20, and in the best shape of my life, after a day spent building a Bailey bridges in AIT I had a heat stroke when we were rucking back to the barracks. 10/10 do not recommend.
