I recently came across that point about the ATF, and later the DEA, being make work programs for Treasury agents after the repeal of Volstead. Interesting comparison to NATO. Seems our reading lists overlap.
Finally the deal for US to withdraw from NATO if Russia withdraws from Ukraine and lets them join NATO...while it's a fair deal, I don't think either side is magnanimous enough to agree to it.
I respect Ferguson in some ways but like all historiographers(me included), we must keep our bias filters on a tight leash. The ATF debacle starting with the 1934 NFA has been a trail of tears for liberty.
I don’t think Russia would ever accept NATO membership for the UKR.
