I shoot with both eyes open so I wonder if I simply reversed the location of the close reading lens to the top instead of the bottom to shoot red dots...

I could use some lessons . Sorry about the essay I really enjoy your podcasts Bill.

I cant see far away. If Im wearing prescription glasses the nose of the barrel is fuzzy the red dot doesn’t form . When it’s possible I shoot single handed. It needs improvement. Style I copy Gomez thumbs canted forward

Different calibers in austere environments bordering a fudd i turn 51 July the eyes went quickly. Knives of course USN Filipino SeaDaddy for a grandfather from the old Philippines before they levelled it to root out the imperial Japanese. His Captain picked NOB/NAS Norfolk . I appreciate anything thats has sound fundamentals or being coached up .Thats hard to beat.

Helping a good friend through outfitting his first AR and getting going. I think for putting shots on a target, the LVPO is the way to go for a beginner even over a red dot, particularly once you get sighted in the bullet drop compensation is magic. Almost any modern AR will be quite good enough, Smith and Wesson, Ruger, Springfield, I think Mossberg even makes them now.

As our host said, get a good scope mount, but that Strike Eagle is quite adequate.

A sling. A weapon light (streamlight is fine) at least 6 and ideally 10-12 more magazines than the one that came with the rifle.

A way to carry those magazines (USMC or Army TAPs chest rig is cheap surplus.) Attach a canteen to that.

Keep eye pro and ear pro on the rig. Take a stop the bleed class and learn the basics of an IFAK to administer self aid.

Keep magazines in the chest rig and loaded. Leave a few loose magazine and the remainder of your ammo for periodic trips to the range. Pay for training.

Time seems to be running short.

Magazines: I use Magpul and if possible store all of my ammo in magazines, keep buying magazines and I have bad news for you, like the milgov, you must consider your magazines an expendable item. Load to 29rds and get a magazines loader like an RRS.

Per canteen, I use 32oz Nalgenes. You can buy surplus coyote SFLCS 200rd SAW pouch and hold the Nalgene and a magazine.

Like holsters, if you are new to chest rigs and plate carriers, just resign yourself to having a box of woe of discarded rigs.

This may be a long thread...

Learn to use, and always carry, a sling, as in David and Goliath. Learn to make them too. All Roman soldiers carried one, but back then those from rural areas probably grew up using them.

David,

I agree and wrote on this very thing: https://zerogov.com/2018/06/25/village-praxis-the-sling-is-the-ring-of-power-by-bill-buppert/

Actually, I was referring to the kind that throw stones and man made sling bullets. No warrior should be without one. (Slings on rifles are very important.)

Good stuff Bill. Just got a Vortex Strike Eagle 1x8 was on sale at PSA. I don’t know shit from shinola about it. I have a Sig Red Dot on there now. My brother runs a Sight Mark on his KSG25. It has the biggest window I have ever seen. Can’t recall the model number off hand. He has run many shells thru it to date. No problems thus far. I understand that may not be a favorite brand to most gun enthusiasts.

We hit clay birds with it quite accurately. Like the name suggests it can hold 25–2 3/4 shells. If you have minis that number expands to about 40. I have the regular KSG which holds about half I think. Both would be my pick in a close quarter situation.

If there are any “LPVO for dummies” you can recommend please let me know. Haven’t even taken it out of the box. Am in the analysis paralysis stage. Not sure what I want to do. Buy another rifle perhaps for the purpose of mounting the LPVO?

Like listening and reading your work. You’re one of the smart ones 😉

Luke, don't spoil the use of the LPVO by getting a cheap mount; the mount is the "marriage" between your rifle and the optic. Piccatinny is an engineering miracle. I always counsel spend more on optics than the gun. Consider getting a MantisX Blackbeard to dry fire your AR platform.

Per LPVO: that Strike Eagle is going to be rather easy to true at the range. Get it done soonest.

Reach out with questions.

Thank you sir, the cantilever Mount was included in the package. My buddy does a lot of training (gun run I guess) with former spec ops guys. There’s one where they are out there a few days. He talked me into it. My other friend told me where to go have it mounted so it’s leveled correctly. Both of those guys are avid deer hunters too. Need to get my ass in gear and get it done.
