Excellent article.

Bobby Sands MP paraphrased Terence McSwiney – “it is not those who can inflict the most, but those that can suffer the most who will win”

Sorry Kevin. I have first-hand experience of British troops on the streets of Belfast. Grieving relatives don’t give 2 f**ks about their state of mind.

Exhausting your enemy while you are able to endure to the end (fragile vs anti-fragile) describes both the Iraq and Afghan American wars of the early 21st century. It is strange (but I guess not unexpected) that they echo this story from the early 20th century. I wonder if the institutions of power will ever learn anything from these lessons.

Collins is a personal hero of mine. Taken from us too soon, like so many in the war for independence and civil wars, we were left with the scrap metal of the time in terms of leaders.

I know this is heresy but if I may cut some slack for the Brits during this time, a lot of these guys in the Black and Tans, British Regulars and RIC were returning from the horrors of the Western Front and with what some would consider some of the worst cases of PTSD we can imagine. Not to excuse lack of discipline and extreme brutality, but worth mentioning.
