Chasing Ghosts: An Irregular Warfare Podcast

An unauthorized podcast and essay series peeking behind the curtain at the vast machinery and briar patch politics of fighting terrorism and insurgency and everything in between.

I'm a "COINtra" and not a "COINdinista", the latter are the vast army of apparatchiks and apologists who fire the engines of Irregular Warfare (IW) planet-wide. We're the skeptics and doubters of all things IW and special operations. And we are a tiny sliver of the IW community. I have noticed a jarring gap in this part of the discussion and intend on filling the breach.

Anyone attending the Special Operations Forces Week festivities in Tampa on 5-8 May 2025?

If so, we should arrange a rendezvous.

I also publish occasional essays in Dispatch and speak to conventional warfare in my infrequent WarNotes podcast.

I am NOT Special Forces (SF) nor Ranger tabbed nor a graduate of the SF Qualification Course. I was an 18E candidate in A/3-12 SFG(A) who received an active duty commission (OCS) in lieu of attendance of the SF qualification training pipeline as an Army NCO.

Comments Policy:

The readership of the Chasing Ghosts has grown considerably. Now for the bad news. In every group of a thousand readers there are one or two people who post comments I refuse to tolerate. Thus, to save readers from encounters with such nonsense, and me from the trouble of deleting comments I find unwholesome, I offer three rules.

  1. Please refrain from personal attacks of any sort. This includes addressing an author, whether of an article or another comment, by any term of derision.

  2. Be gentlemanly and behave like you are in the same room as your interlocutor.

  3. Please avoid filling up the comments section with walls of text and use paragraphs. (Shorter is sweeter. Pithy is best.)

In short, make sure that your comments are classy and of interest to your fellow readers.
